Obituary for George Edward Shabenas Jr.

George E. Shabenas, Jr,. passed away on March 11, 2021 at Canterbury Rehab Center, Richmond, VA. He was born in Toledo, OH on April 18, 1938, and was the son of George E. Shabenas Sr. and Juanita (Jane) Shabenas. He was currently living in Chester, Virginia with his wife of 27 years, Dorothea (Dora) Shabenas (Kendrick). George and Dora previously lived in Bracey, Virginia for many years and were both actively involved in the River Ridge community there.

Before moving to Virginia, George lived in Brooklyn, CT for 32 years where he raised five children with his wife Beverly. He was employed by General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT for several years and was proud to be involved in the construction of submarines for the U.S. Navy. George was also actively involved in his Brooklyn community coaching sports, Boy Scouts, and serving as a local town constable for many years.

George was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served as an Engineman Third Class aboard the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) as it passed under the North Pole on August 3, 1958. For this, he received a Presidential Unit Citation from President Eisenhower. He was very proud of his Navy career and would often shared stories with family and friends.

Besides his wife Dora, he is survived by his five children; Brenda (Michael) Cote of Florida, George E. Shabenas III of Massachusetts, Justine (Gary) Smith of Connecticut, James (LaShonya) Shabenas of Florida, Michael Shabenas and his fiancee Jessica O’Brien of Connecticut, as well as five step-children, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

George was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was pre-deceased by his siblings, twin brother Andrew T. (Tom) Shabenas, Dellann Shabenas Pennrod, and William R. (Bill) Shabenas and grandchildren, Joel M. Shabenas and Haley M. Shabenas.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 1pm, Thursday, March 18, 2021 at Crestview Memorial Park with military honors. Condolences may be shared at www.farrarfuneralhome.net. Farrar Funeral Home of South Hill is serving the Shabenas family.
